Occupational fatalities in Yecla (08/07/2011)

A new accident has killed a worker in this region, today was in a quarry in Yecla, apparently, a brutal blow to the head caused by a machine has been the manner in which the worker, 35 , died on the spot.

Since UGT in the absence of more specific information about what happened, we say that we regret this incident and express our solidarity with the families and colleagues of the victim, and as we have been denouncing the lack of management of occupational risk prevention in many companies in this region, where there is appropriate assessment of risks and preventive measures are taken to stop them, and lack of training and information on prevention of occupational hazards, are major causes of accidents such as occurred this morning.

So far this year, in the absence of contrasts these figures with the official data of June, we took a staggering 20 workers killed in accident, (official figures: 18 until May, but the fatal accident of Lorca 20 June-worker with 24 years falling from a height, and today in Yecla).

In addition, until May there have been a total of 44 serious accidents at work and around 6,500 minor accidents.

Job insecurity, perpetuated by the recent labor reform is another factor favoring the exposure of workers to suffer appalling working conditions.

In UGT turn to demand greater efficiency and rigor in the act by the Inspectorate of Labour and Social Security.

The prime the requirement that the penalty in its performance inspection (after the workers have had to resort to sue your company or government for repeated failure to comply with its obligations preventative) results, in our view, an easing by the responsible Business and Public Administration, when addressing a serious and effective preventive obligations, relaxation, as evidenced by the steady trickle of accidents, means exposing workers to unnecessary risks to their health and safety.
