The Mayor of Yecla, Mark Ortuño, accompanied by the Councillor for the Environment, Jesús Verdú, met this morning in Murcia with the Minister of Universities and Research Company, José Ballesta, to track the European project " Medeea ".

At the meeting were present also the mayors of Alhama de Murcia, Murcia, White, Cieza, La Union, Puerto Lumbreras and Torre Pacheco, which together with our city involved in this project that aims to achieve an effective local energy policy.

Municipalities that achieve the objectives of the project may be certified European Energy Award, which will endorse them as municipalities that have developed sustainable energy plans for significant savings in energy consumption and emissions to the atmosphere as explained by Mayor our city has stated that the implementation of municipal energy plans provide an opportunity for the whole sector of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

This European project, which links to the objectives set out in the Covenant of Mayors, involves the development and implementation of effective local energy policy, once fully implemented will allow energy savings of close to 40 million euros year, from 8 participating municipalities, as explained by the Director.

José Ballesta also stated that "it is expected that over the coming years until 2020, made investments of approximately EUR 400 million to improve energy efficiency."

For the design of energy-saving plans, these eight municipalities have the Ministry of Universities and Research Company, through the Agency for Energy Management in the Region of Murcia, provides them with technical advice to decide what adopt measures and study the feasibility of them.

Among these measures, which include the use of renewable energy is from the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on municipal buildings or biomass boilers for indoor climate control until the change of LED street lighting systems and energy efficient lighting .

The Agency for Energy Management of the Autonomous Community Support Structure is the Covenant of Mayors in the region and partner with project Medeea Jaén and other energy agencies from Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Malta and Slovenia.
