A new climate summit begins today at the UN marked by the absence of representatives from prominent countries involved and breaches of the Paris summit agreements in 2015.
In 2011, the City Council of Yecla approved to join the program promoted by the European Union called "Covenant of Mayors" and supervised by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.
On that date the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) was drafted through which the City of Yecla has been fulfilling its commitments to reduce CO2 emissions through energy efficiency actions and related to renewable energy sources, This issue we must continue working on.
The campaigns of responsible consumption of energy or water, the commitment to public transport, the tax rebates to constructions with energy efficiency systems or the discount to electric vehicles.
The extension of green areas, bike lanes and pedestrian areas.
The replacement of diesel boilers with pellets, the improvement of the envelope of municipal buildings, the prioritization in the installation of devices of higher efficiency standards or the change of light lighting by LED system, is allowing the municipality of Yecla to work for meeting the objectives of reducing emissions set.
In spite of the efforts made from the town halls, it is true that the great national and international policies do not favor a large-scale emission reduction, turning the town hall effort into little more than a symbolic gesture.
If to that the refusal of the big polluting countries in participating of the commitments established in the different summits by the climate is added.
And the lack of emission reduction policies in our country, with an almost total energy dependence based on the importation of oil mainly, or the much needed reconversion of coal, is why it is considered justified that civil society make a gesture of protest to call attention to governments, mainly from developed countries, including Spain, so that once and for all they take the problem of climate change seriously and take the necessary measures to mitigate its effects before it is too late.
For this reason, from the City Council of Yecla, the Department of the Environment joins the citizen mobilization and invites all Yeclanos to participate in the popular concentration promoted by the citizen platforms Save the Arabí and Comarca and Yecla the Cleanest City of Spain, within the world movement that will take place next Friday 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Plaza Mayor.
