Yecla participates, along with eight European cities in the "Footprint of Wood", which aims to revive economically, cities where the furniture sector, are in a declining phase or critical.
The Department of Industry of the city of Yecla, through Local Development Agency participates in the "Footprint of Wood", part of the URBACT program, funded by the European Commission, to promote networking between cities belonging to different states of the union.
URBACT is proposed with the aim of promoting economic modernization, growth and job creation, as well as the transfer of European policy measures and lines of local programs.
In this project we find 29 countries involved, over 300 cities and more than 5,000 active participants, who develop different programs that foster innovation, urban mobility, sustainable growth and the promotion of entrepreneurship, among others.
Within these program found "Footprint of Wood", one of 11 projects that have progressed to the second stage in this edition.
Its objective is set to "revive economically, cities where his main economic sector, the cabinet, are in a declining phase or critical" as explained José Antonio Hernández., Councillor of Industry.
Near the town of Yecla in this program involves the cities of Pazos de Ferreira (Portugal), who leads the project, Roesalare (Belgium), Vivorg (Denmark), Tartu (Estonia), Lecce (Italy), Monaghan (Ireland) , Sternatia (Italy), Larissa (Greece) and Wycombe (United Kingdom).
The program seeks to provide alternatives to strengthen the furniture industry, but also to diversify the city economically encouraging other sustainable sectors, sharing successful methods and practices.
"Timber Footprint" has initiated contacts between the participating cities, sharing views and experiences, through the exchange of documentation and virtual conferences.
During the year 2013 all cities must develop a local action plan capable of addressing the challenges listed above.
Industry Councilman explained that to develop this local action plan, has developed a local action group, "according to the guidelines set by URBACT and composed of representatives of ANIEME, Arema, Asocomy, Ayeco, Cetem, Furniture Fair , wine route, the University of Murcia and companies representing the city. This group works to develop a plan that encompasses various actions capable of responding to present and future challenges of Yecla, helping to strengthen our primary economic sector but at the same time encouraging the creation and development of other sectors with high potential for job creation, with a single purpose, to return to its former status Yecla but this time in a more balanced, sustainable and diversified ".
Industry Councilman Jose Antonio Hernandez finally stated that "Timber Footprint represents an excellent opportunity to plan for present and future economic, social and urban development, to obtain the necessary funding to implement local policies and put us in front before the Union and the European Commission "
