The yeclano student Sergio Melero Hernandez with his murciana companion Pilar Rodríguez Losantos, tutored by Professor Luis Gálvez, participated representing the University of Murcia in the World Debating Championship held in the city of Mexico City between 26 July and August 4 which attracted more than 200 participants from 14 different nationalities.
The team from the University of Murcia managed to qualify for the finals after the results of the previous rounds and was measured against teams from prestigious universities such as the TEC de Monterrey, Andrés Bello in Chile or Colgate University, which include among their ranks with some of the best Spanish-language speakers, eliminating, among others, the highest-ranked team in the championship.
Finally, Sergio Rodríguez Pilar Melero and fell in the semifinals against two Spanish teams, the University of Cordoba and the Autonomous University of Madrid.
In an unprecedented result the best obtained to date from the creation of the Debate Club of the University of Murcia five years ago, Sergio Melero states that "this result has been the result of a great effort all year. We have dedicated many hours preparing this tournament and still could not even dream of such a result. "
