The yeclano also won the Best Speaker Award fourth in singles while teammate Pilar Rodriguez got the second place in the tournament held in Bogotá between 20 and 29 July.
For the first time in the history of the University of Murcia, the team of the yeclano Sergio Murcia Pilar Melero and Rodríguez managed to reach the final at the World Debating Championship annually in all Spanish-speaking universities, held between past dispute 20 to July 29 at the headquarters of the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia.
The delegation Debate Club UM under the academic direction of Professor of Constitutional Law Luis Alberto Galvez Munoz, also was represented by Manuel Antonio Paredes tournament judge and participant in the Spanish Cup of Nations tournament parallel held alongside the World in which only judges and trainers of the clubs from participating.
The team from the University of Murcia reached the final, after finishing as fourth in the previous rounds, in which participated 108 teams from more than 50 universities around the world.
In that final they were measured at the University of Rosario, which was finally winning the championship.
In the individual section, Sergio Melero won the award for best speaker of the tournament room and Pilar Rodriguez won the second place among the 250 participants that it disputed.
In turn, Manuel Paredes, got the victory for Spain against Chile in the Nations Cup, after being unbeaten in all the meetings that took place in that category Championship.
Sergio Melero, who is also the Vice President of the Debate Club has stated that "it is an honor to compete at this level representing the name of Yecla and my university against universities around the world, achieving a historic result for a club as modest like ours, which has managed to live up to major universities with a long history in this area and considerable resources, which demonstrates the great work from the University of Murcia is being exerted in promoting oratory and debate ".
