The Minister of Education, Training and Employment, Sotoca Constantine recognized today during the inauguration of the 'Day of living for students with hearing impairment', held at the Colegio Santa Maria de Gracia de Murcia, "the effort that parents, teachers, associations and institutions are engaged, along with the regional administration to promote the effective integration of students with hearing impairment standard in educational spaces. "
In this regard, he noted that "the work of all has been possible to find solutions that are contributing to the full integration of these children and youth in schools in the region, as well as having the same opportunities as other students and to see open new horizons for their future. "
The Education Minister noted that currently there are 400 students integrated in the centers of the region, and stressed that his department is determined to continue working to provide parents with access to the kind of education they want for their children anywhere the Region.
Among its projects, the Minister announced that next year will launch a new bilingual school in Yecla (the fifth center on the agenda 'ABC'), which will meet the demands of the region of Altiplano.
Thus, increase again the efforts and resources for the program "ABC" which this year has already exceeded 1.1 million euros.
In his speech, Sotoca recognized in a special way the work of the Colegio Santa Maria de Gracia, organizer of the day, to integrate students with impaired hearing, and stressed the involvement of teachers, parents and associations in the project's success .
He also praised the center complete adaptation to the needs of this group, "reflected even in the smallest details: sign, signage, alarms or bells have been replaced by systems on and off lights, among others, and are the result of collaboration and collective commitment. "
Development of the project
Hearing impaired students enrolled in four centers in the region attached to the program 'ABC' are going up school dropout rates, estimated at 40 percent in 2000-2001, to successfully overcome in most cases, each of the educational levels of primary education in 2008-2009.
This achievement made Purias College in Lorca, obtained the national award that recognizes the achievements of schools that have undertaken various actions aimed at students with special needs.
Have also achieved high academic success rates among people with hearing impairments in other centers such as the Santa María de Gracia, in Murcia, and Beethoven, in Cartagena.
Attention to students with hearing impairment has placed the region at the head of the country, both by implementing measures such as program pioneers 'ABC', which has driven the full adaptation of four sites to the needs of deaf students, and has led to the introduction of bilingual teaching (sign language and oral), and the diversity of options available to families.
At the moment the parents of students with some type of hearing loss in the region can choose between bilingual schools of the 'ABC' centers that have sign language interpreters in the classroom.
Some centers, the latter, in which students also receive specialized care to ensure their full integration in the socio-educational center.
